The Jatika Sangha Sammelanaya yesterday invited patriotic section of the JHU, the JVP, the SLFP, the UNF and other national organisations to attend its National Conference to be held in Nugegoda tomorrow. “We are trying to unite all patriotic people under one banner,” Sangha Sammelanaya Chief Organiser, Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera told at a news conference.
“The time has come for all patriotic sections to join hands with the Sangha Sammelanaya to defeat the attempts of President Kumaratunga and certain International organisations to divide the country,” he said.
The monk also called on patriots in the main parties to defy their pro-western leaders and join the Sammelenaya. JHU Parliamentary Group Leader, Ven. Aturaliye Ratana Thera said discussions were being held to form a new national alliance and nominate a national leader to contest the forthcoming presidential elections.
“The time has come for us to choose a national leader who will give priority to national interest without giving in to international forces,” he said.
Ven. Ratana Thera charged that the President and International groups were planning to destroy the Sinhala-Buddhist culture established on a Poson Poya day nearly 2300 years ago.
He also expressed satisfaction over the JVP leaving the government and said it was a pleasure to see the JVP freeing itself from a trap and establishing itself as a new national movement, which serves the interests of Sri Lanka. “The JVP was in a trap set up by Norway, the World Bank and the IMF,” he said.
JHU General Secretary, Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera this week wrote to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva inviting them to enter a new national alliance to defeat the P-TOMS and rising threats from LTTE.
