Ban Pongu Tamil Monk group tells Canada
By Damitha Hemachandra
The Jatika Sanga Sammelanaya yesterday called upon the Canadian government to suspend the proposed ‘Pongutamil’, a pro-LTTE propaganda festival organised by the Canadian Tamil Student Association.
Spokesman for Sanga Sammelanaya, Ven. Galagodaatte Knanasara Thera pointed that any support rendered to the ‘Pongutamil’ Programme would be a hand lend to the atrocities committed by LTTE in Sri Lanka violating the Cease Fire Agreement between LTTE and Sri Lankan government.
“ The LTTE continues to recruit child soldiers, harass and kill Sinhalese, Muslims and Tamils, who oppose them,” he said.
Ven. Thera pointed that LTTE draw heavy funds for their Terrorist activities in Sri Lankan through ‘Pongutamil’ and stressed that any support rendered to the programme would be support to the LTTE.
The Sanga Sammelanaya would be holding a protest against the Canadian government and Sri Lankan government failure to take any action against the LTTE’S plan to hold ‘Pongutamil’ in countries including Australia, New Zealand, France, Switzerland, Italy, Norway and Germany.
The festival is highly backed and funded by pro-LTTE Tamil organisations and Tamil media groups in Canada, which includes 17 weekly newspapers, five 24-hour radio stations and two TV channels.
The festival would be held on September 25 in Toronto and the Tamil shop owners had been ordered to close their shop and attend the festival.
Leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), V. Anandasangaree earlier informed the Canadian High Commissioner of illegal activities of the LTTE within Canada and the attempts of the LTTE to promote terrorism under the guise of ‘Pongu-Tamil’, although the Canadian authorities had still failed to respond.
