Wednesday, September 08, 2004
A Sunday Sinhala newspaper, 'Lanka' was ordered to pay Rs. 20 million by the Mount Lavinia District Court to Jatika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Secretary Champaka Ranawaka for publishing an article linking him with a Christian fundamentalist group.
'Lanka' published by Lanka Multi Publisher (Pvt.) Ltd. and edited by Tissa Nihal Wickremesinghe had published an article, which suggested that JHU Secretary, Champaka Ranawaka was hiding in a church in 1989 while his wife was a follower of a Christian fundamentalist group.
Ranawaka argued that this statement and article was a deliberate attempt to tarnish his image as a 'Sinhala Buddhist activist'.
The court agreed that there is no basis to the article and that it was published with the intention of insulting Champaka Ranawaka and ordered the payment of Rs. 20 million as compensation
